Surgeon Botches Newborn's Circumcision Leading To Full Amputation

After a botched circumcision on an infant boy, a surgeon ended up having to perform an amputation. The doctor damaged the seven-day-old newborn's skin after overheating the tissue while cauterizing the foreskin.

This led to skin discoloration before it eventually died, forcing them to enact a full amputation of the organ. Although the doctors attempted to remove the dead tissue, "the entire organ perished along with the skin that covered it," they said.

According to the Daily Mail, the doctors had to insert a catheter from what was left of the amputated organ. It stayed there for three months as it prevented the urethra from shrinking, as reported by the Annals of Medicine & Surgery in this harrowing 2023 case.

Luckily, after many follow-up appointments, the infant from Somalia healed correctly and safely. According to Boston Children's Hospital, the CDC estimates that around 64% of newborn boys undergo the circumcision procedure. Some cultures perform it for religious reasons, others for health reasons.

There are benefits to circumcising your child, such as eliminating certain cancer risks and reducing the chances of UTIs. Otherwise, Cleveland Clinic reported that less than 3% of circumcisions have complications, so this is a rare case.

Despite the rarity, the Daily Mail called the surgeon "inexperienced." With the information that we do have, we don't yet know if this surgeon faced any repercussions for this horrifying mistake. Even though the boy healed alright, this should not have happened in the first place. Only qualified and practiced surgeons should handle such procedures.

Unfortunately, some parents believe this is the sort of thing they should take into their own hands. Last December, cops charged a Missouri couple for performing an unauthorized circumcision on their child. Obviously, the father was not trained for this, and the botched surgery "did not go as planned."

The young boy began to bleed out after the father failed to stop the bleeding. This was when they eventually rushed him to the hospital to get proper care, leading to their eventual charges.
