Swift announced the news on her boyfriend Travis Kelce's New Heights podcast. Swift reveals the record stems from her time on her global Eras Tour.
"This album is about what was going on behind the scenes in my inner life during this tour, which was so exuberant and electric and vibrant," Swift explains. "And it just comes from the most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place I was in in my life. And so, that effervescence has come through on this record."
Swift maintains that The Life of a Showgirl is a complete project, insisting there will not be more songs coming after the record is released, unlike her 35-track Tortured Poets Department, out last year.
"There's no other songs coming. It's not like, like with Tortured Poets Department. I was like, 'Here's a data dump of everything I've thought, felt...," she adds.
Why Taylor Swift Says She Will Not Add to 'The Life Of A Showgirl'
Taylor Swift has been known to surprise fans before. But the Pennsylvania native says whatever she releases next, it will not be part of The Life Of A Showgirl.
"This is 12," Swift says. "There's not a 13th; there's not a 14th. There's not other ones coming. This is the record I've been wanting to make for a very long time. And I also wanted it to be just - every single song is on this album for hundreds of reasons. You couldn't take one out, and it be the same album. You couldn't add one ... it's just right.
"And that focus and that kind of discipline with creating an album and keeping the bar really high is something I've been wanting to do for a very long time," she adds. "I tend to love to write lots and lots of music. So it's a temptation to release lots of music."
The 35-year-old released her self-titled first album in 2006. The significance of releasing a total of 12 albums is important to Swift, and a milestone she wants to celebrate.
"I wanted to do an album that was so focused on quality and on the theme, and everything fitting together, like a perfect puzzle," Swift explains." "These 12 songs from my 12th album, I feel like we achieved that and I'm really happy about that."
