Well, I'd first like to wish America a happy Memorial Day before we begin! (Even if it is a little belated.) And honestly, learning how much meat we consume makes me love the holiday that much more. Because it is an astronomical amount of beef, let me tell you. especially when you factor in the whole weekend.

Happy (Belated) Memorial Day!
Yes, before we start cracking jokes about Americans eating meat, I'd like to take a minute. Let's all remember why we get this extended weekend off from work. I've been fortunate enough to never have a family member die in service. But to all the families out there who've dealt with this, we commend you. We celebrate your loved ones laying down their lives so that we can sit behind laptops and write about stuffing beef in our mouths.
This is an absolute privilege, and one that was paid for by the men and women who fought for it. We are all thankful to their continued sacrifice each and every day. I hope you gave your servicemen and women an extra hug for me today. We all salute your work. Now on to the funnies!
Beef Just Tastes Better On The Weekend
I promise that whatever number was in your head before you read this article was wrong. It is truly awe-inspiring how much beef this country consumes on Memorial Day weekend.
Now, I won't pretend to have done the math myself. (I don't have the time or intelligence to have pulled that off.) But I luckily didn't have to. The National Beef Cattlemen's Association did it for me.
According to them, 55.8 million pounds of beef will be eaten over the weekend. I'll say it one more time for the party people in the back. 56. Million. Pounds. Yeah, if that doesn't blow your mind, I've got another few stats for you.
Americans will average 818 hot dogs per second on Memorial Day. That is diabolical. 818 hot dogs a second. Do you know how many seconds are in a 24-hour day? If my math's correct, there's about 86,400 seconds. You're telling me we're eating 818 hot dogs in every single one of those? That's insane.
I'm so proud to be an American.
