George Strait had a big hit in 1984 with "Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind," but it could have been a hit for Reba McEntire instead. The song, written by Sanger D. Shafer along with his then-wife, Darlene Shafer, was first recorded by Moe Bandy.

According to
Classic Country Music Stories, McEntire was also pitched the song, but declined because it referenced beer. The song begins with the lines, "Cold Fort Worth beer just ain't no good for jealous / I tried it night after night / You're in someone else's arms in Dallas / Does Fort Worth ever cross your mind?""Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind" was the title track of Strait's fourth studio album. That record also included "The Cowboy Rides Away" and "The Fireman," both Top 10 hits for Strait.
"Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind" was reportedly also recorded by Keith Whitley, although Whitley never released it on his own. The song earned Strait his first CMA Award, for Album of the Year. It also gave Strait a nomination for Single of the Year. The song, considered among the best of Strait's many, many singles, is still a fan-favorite today.
