Last year, at the CMA Awards, Cody Johnson and Jelly Roll finally got to see each other in person. According to Jelly Roll, it was a magical moment that he often thinks about.
The "Save Me" singer sat down with CMT, where he delved into the heartwarming memory.
"When I won the first award, I came down the steps and the first person I see was Cody Johnson," he earnestly remembered. "And he gave me a hug like we grew up together."
Their hug was clearly genuine. There was so much mutual respect between the ex-prison guard and ex-convict.
"And he said, 'Man, I'm so proud of you, dude. Like, this is so good,'" Jelly Roll remembered Johnson saying.
"First person I seen in that moment could have looked at me like, 'Why is this dude here?' But instead, it was just genuine Texas cowboy."
"[He] lit up like a Christmas tree for me, and it was just... I never would have guessed just how impactful that moment was."
Both of the country singers have spoken about their respect and love for each other. Naturally, they did collab on the song "Whiskey Bent" for Johnson's album Leather.
The Picture That Jelly Roll Holds Dear
An iconic photo was taken of Cody Johnson and Jelly Roll, and it's one he holds close to his heart. It's the very same one that greeted you when you clicked on to this article (Thank you, by the way).
"But that picture, I think about that picture all the time. Because somebody caught us in that moment, we turned around and took a picture real quick," he said.
"I'll have that framed in my house until I die."
Jelly Roll's appreciation for genuine interaction is always on display, but it's shining here. What I love about the country scene right now is for the most part, these artists and icons really care about each other.
And the picture is an iconic one, you can see their love for each other shine in their smiles.
