Thomas Rhett Replaces Blake Shelton on ”Old Trick” With His 'Rival'

The updated version of the 2024 song, which Rhett originally recorded with Blake Shelton, will come out this Friday.

Who would want to replace someone as legendary as Blake Shelton? Thomas Rhett, apparently.

The two worked together on the song "Old Tricks," a track from Rhett's 2024 album About A Woman. However, when it came time to shoot visuals for the song, Shelton wasn't available. Instead, he asked a friend of the "God Gave Me You" singer to fill in.

Shelton was a little shocked when Rhett told him who it was.

Rhett Told Blake Shelton the News in a Text

In a social media post last week, Rhett created a fake text thread to share the news with Blake and fans. It begins with Rhett telling Shelton he found "a friend" who is "a pretty good singer" to fill in for him.

"I think you might know him, actually," he writes.

"Who are you thinking?" asks Shelton.

Niall Horan then enters the chat.

"Blake," exclaims Horan. "Did you hear TR and I have a song coming out together?"

As fans of The Voice may know, Horan, who came to fame as a member of the boy band One Direction, won the show on his first season of the reality singing competition show with contestant Gina Miles. It was also Shelton's last season, spoiling the singer's opportunity to go out on a high note.

"Let me get this straight," Shelton continues. "First you steal my last chance at a win on The Voice and now you're stealing my song? Unbelievable."

"You're gonna live it, Blake," Rhett assures him. "Promise."

Horan ends the chat with, "Talk to you later, Dad!"

Blake Has Been Busy Lately

Shelton has been busy with his latest project, The Road. Earlier this year, we spoke with him about what inspired the reality singing competition show, which will star Keith Urban.

"I did so much time on The Voice working with artists and being in front of the camera and thinking the whole time, 'How would I do this different?'" he said.

His buddy, Lee Metzger, had an idea. Metzger told him, "'Man, there needs to be a reality singing show that's really capturing these [singers] out in these bars trying to win over these crowds that aren't necessarily there to see them.'"

Then, in August, we reported that Shelton and his wife, Gwen Stefani, would serve as executive producers for a new Prime Video series titled Dorothy. It is a retelling of The Wizard of Oz aimed at young adults.

So if Shelton finds himself stretched too thin, it seems Horan is ready to step in when needed.
