"I just try to take care of myself the best I can," McGraw explains. "Try to keep myself in shape, try to eat as good as I can when I'm touring. Of course, I have to have my cheat dates as well. But I just try to keep everything loose and limber. And of course, I've had a foot broken three times, knee surgeries, elbow surgeries, back surgeries. So, I try to do it as hard as I can, but without hurting myself too bad."
McGraw is fortunately well enough to return to touring. He has several dates on the calendar in 2025, including the Nashville rodeo, and his Field of Dreams concert.
Tim McGraw's Sobriety
One thing McGraw does to stay healthy is cut out alcohol. The father of three got sober in 2008, at the urging of his wife, Faith Hill.
"I remember a moment when I was getting out of bed and going to the liquor cabinet and taking a big shot at 8 in the morning and thinking, 'I have to wake the kids up,' McGraw recalls to Esquire. "I went straight to my wife and said, 'This is where I'm at.' I was scared."
"When your wife tells you it's gone too far, that's a big wake-up call," he adds. "That, and realizing you're gonna lose everything you have. Not monetarily, not career-wise, but family-wise."
It was also by looking at one of his musical heroes, and his tragic early death, which inspired McGraw to stop drinking.
"Keith Whitley taught me how demons can overtake you if you let them, and I was headed down that path," McGraw says. "You feel like you're supposed to be 'on' all the time. Then you drink and get onstage, and all of a sudden you feel confident and powerful. It became a habit."
McGraw is back at radio with "Paper Umbrellas," a collaboration with Parker McCollum. He is reportedly working on a new album.
