Walmart Is Laying Off Hundreds Of Jobs In Mass Layoff

Walmart is not only axing hundreds of jobs across the country but also shutting one of its offices in North Carolina. An internal memo revealed that the corporation is moving forward with its plans to gather and bring its employees to its California and Arkansas hubs, as previously announced.

The memo, obtained by Fox Business on Tuesday, February 4, asks office-based employees from its Hoboken office and several smaller locations across the country to move to its office in Sunnyvale, California, or its headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. The message, written by Walmart Chief People Officer Donna Morris, also confirms the cutting of jobs, affecting hundreds.

"We are making these changes to put key capabilities together, encouraging speed and shared understanding," wrote Morris in the memo. "Through this review process, we have eliminated some roles as we streamline how we work."

"Our values and culture are strategic differentiators for us as a company, and they are fostered by being together," the memo continued. "We've already seen the benefits of having more teams working together in person, and today we are sharing another step that will help accelerate our momentum."

Relocation Strategy

How many jobs will be lost as part of Walmart's latest changes is unclear. However, employees have approximately one month to inform Walmart whether they will be relocating or not.

This set of changes started back in February 2022. Then America's largest employer began asking their employees to return to the office. This came after a period of remote work stemming from the COVID pandemic. This change aimed to strengthen company culture and boost collaboration, among other things.

Later, in May 2024, after Walmart opened its corporate headquarters in Bentonville, the company began its relocation strategy. Employees from Dallas, Atlanta, and Toronto were asked to relocate to Bentonville, Hoboken, and California. They furtherly asked for remote workers to return to their offices.

According to the Daily Mail, Walmart will open new offices in Sunnyvale and Bellevue, Washington. It will also expand its Hoboken offices and its fashion office in New York City. Moreover, Walmart is working toward its previously announced goal of having 65% of its stores automated by 2026.
