Fry-tastic Choices!

I will be the first to tell you that the people's choice for greatest fry surprised the grease out of me. In my head, McDonald's was pretty unanimously number one in the fries business. Their French Fries were always heavily salted, pretty thin, easy to snack on, and packed tight. Not much more you can ask for.

But I've since come to find out, I'm pretty heavily in the minority. In fact, what I thought would be a clean sweep for numero uno came in second to last. That's right, folks, the McDonald's fry came in at a 1.91 out of five on the rating system. That blew my mind.

It appears that French Fry fans prefer the more hand-cut, intimate experience, at least, according to the polls' top ten answers.

Titans Of French Fries

I know you all have been waiting ever so patiently for this reveal, so I won't gatekeep it any longer.

Sliding into the top spot, with a rating of 3.86 out of five and based on 7,595 reviews across 25 locations, is: In-N-Out.

Yes, folks, your eyes did not deceive you; the people are desperate for a taste of the In-N-Out fry. Even though the restaurant is not nearly as widespread as its competitors, it's got a die-hard fan base. The biggest props it received seemed to be for the freshness of their fries. They prepare those suckers daily. Which is a lot more work, but the people seem to appreciate it.

Sliding in at number two was a similar shock. Although, as a frequenter of this chain, a lot less surprising: Shake Shack. They were reviewed by more than 17,000. And they got a 3.7 rating. That's genuinely insane to me. 17,000 people all agreed that Shake Shack makes a pretty dang tasty fry.

The reason behind it is pretty simple, though. It's the power of the crinkle cut and good marketing. Shake Shack dropped its popular fry cut in 2013. But the people demanded it be brought back. And clearly they still feel good about that decision.
