Why Jack White Claimed That His Wife Was Actually His Sister For Years

There were a bunch of weird rumors growing up, like that one about Marylin Mason's ribs, Curt Cobain and Courtney Love, and of course, Jack White's wife being his sister. They maintained the rumor, even provoking it a number of times.

It's a weird one for the two of them. Of course, they shared a last name, and really, they looked pretty alike. It wasn't so hard to believe that they could be brother and sister. He even went as far as to confirm it to the media once or twice.

In NME, Jack White told the writer, "We're brother and sister. Someone started a rumor about how we used to be married, and we played along with it. That was a bad idea, we get asked this all the time now." This was amid rumors that a divorce paper had been found with their names on.

The divorce papers were found in Oakland County Circuit Court records. They had both their names on, but Jack White still insisted that they were brother and sister. "I didn't see any signature on that certificate. It certainly didn't look real to me," he said in Spin Magazine. "If people don't want to believe that Meg is my sister, that's fine."

Jack White Gets Tired Of Sister/Wife Rumours

For Jack White, eventually, the rumors about his ex-wife being his sister got a little tiring. They had been seen exchanging a few sexy looks across the stage by fans, and it was all getting a bit weird. Beyond that, it was also taking away form the music. When the rumors become bigger than the band, it's not great for their image.

"In the end, twenty years from now, the only thing that matters about any band is if the music was good," he said during his Spin interview. Jack White, addressing the rumors about his sister/wife mix-up, continued by saying, "People can say whatever they want at this point. It never mattered to us. We were never trying to create this. We were never trying to be icons or hoping to get attention."

But, they did, and they kept this whole weird White Stripes sister-brother wife husband thing going for years, never really becoming clear. It's an odd thing to do, but it probably kept them relevant longer than they deserved.
