Why 'Yellowstone' Star Thought Spinoff Was Bad Idea at First

Spinoffs on TV can be unpredictable entities. They are not always assured of the same success as their forerunners. It's great to capitalize on a show that is popular by creating another one that is an offshoot. However, a ballyhooed spinoff just might fall flat despite the best intentions. That certainly does not seem to be the fate of Marshals, though. It's a Yellowstone spinoff that has been airing for a month. Luke Grimes is revisiting his role as Kayce Dutton on the gritty new CBS drama. Nevertheless, according to Collider, Grimes balked a bit when the idea was first floated to him. Why did he have initial concerns?

Grimes Never Anticipated Doing a Spinoff Based on Kayce Dutton

Per the outlet, the actor asumed he was done with the character when Yellowstone ended. "There was no part of me that thought I was going to be going on with any sort of a spin-off...It was the end of a really beautiful chapter in my life."

When the concept of a new show focused on Kayce was presented to Grimes, he wasn't keen on it. "I thought it sounded like a really bad idea. I didn't really, truly know what procedural meant, so I called my friend, and he explained it to me because he'd done one. He said, 'Dude, that's going to be a lot of work. It's a lot more work for you, especially to be the lead of a procedural.' I was worried about it because it was the unknown."

He Eventually Warmed to the Idea

A couple of things happened to ease Luke Grimes' mind about the proposed spinoff. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut. Hudnut's non-traditional approach to a weekly procedural appealed to Grimes. The actor said, "Fundamentally, what it's about is this team of people, this team of good guys who are going out to find the bad guys. It's a very simple concept at its core, so the procedural element really works for that."

Additionally, Taylor Sheridan, the mastermind behind the Yellowstone franchise, would pitch in if the occasion arose. Grimes said, "I also got the sense that if we ever did need him for anything, he was there, and he would make himself available."

Marshals has already been renewed for another season. So we'll see Kayce's future evolve, watch how he deals with his new career as a U.S. marshal, and witness his adjustment to life without wife Monica by his side. Should be really interesting!
