Per the New York Post, the customer, whose name is Gia Bernhardt, 24, has reportedly filed a civil complaint earlier this month. Per the outlet, she "...ordered a burrito bowl and a side of chips and guacamole from the Chipotle between East 84th and East 85th Street and Third Avenue on Jan. 11 through the DoorDash app...." Bernhardt says she "bit into a rodent" within the food she ordered. The lawsuit also named DoorDash and the delivery person.
What Bernhardt Allegedly Suffered
She reportedly went through quite a bit after biting into the meal. Documents state that she incurred "severe bodily injuries" as a result. Precisely what those injuries were is not clear. The consequences Bernhardt also allegedly endured included mental anguish, pain, and shock, per the outlet.
Chipotle Pushed Back on the Customer's Claim
The Mexican-themed restaurant chain issued a statement. It came from Chief Corporate Affairs and Food Safety Officer Laurie Schalow. According to the Post, that statement said in part, "Internal agents of Chipotle analyzed the evidence both in person and in photographs and are confident the object is a chicken tendon/ligament."
In addition, it said, "The health and safety of our employees and guests is our highest priority, and we have industry-leading food safety practices in place across our restaurants."
Furthermore, a spokesperson communicated to the outlet, that Chipotle "will vigorously defend ourselves against these claims."
Bernhardt Reportedly Brought What She Found in the Food Back to Chipotle
According to dailymail.co.uk, Bernhardt took the alleged rodent that was in her food back to the Chipotle it came from. Her attorney, Charles Gucciardo, said per the outlet via Pix11, "She showed the rodent to the three employees who were present. They tried to convince her that what she had there was a piece of chicken, but the ears, nose, and tail demonstrated otherwise."
Gucciardo also said that Bernhardt vomited because she "actually bit off a piece of the rodent."
