A 24-year-old American tourist and YouTuber, Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, has been accused of illegally visiting a remote Indian island tribe. Polyakov reportedly brought a can of Diet Coke and a coconut with him. The aforementioned tribe is known for the killing of an American missionary back in 2018.

According to CBS News, Polyakov set foot on the island of North Sentinel on Saturday, March 29. Part of the Andaman Islands, the territory is banned to both Indian nationals and foreigners. Furthermore, no one can travel within three miles of the Sentinelese people's territory. Despite the effort to preserve their way of life away from the modern world and its diseases, Polyakov decided to visit the island regardless.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands Police Chief HGS Dhaliwal revealed that, bizarrely, Polyakov brought a can of Diet Coke and a coconut as an offering for the Sentinelese. Polyakov reportedly recorded his arrival using a GoPro.
"He landed briefly for about five minutes, left the offerings on the shore, collected sand samples, and recorded a video before returning to his boat," Dhaliwal told The Associated Press. "A review of his GoPro camera footage showed his entry and landing into the restricted North Sentinel Island."
Past Attempts
As per the outlet, this is not Polyakov's first attempt to reach the Sentinelese. Allegedly, he first tried to arrive at the by using an inflatable kayak back in October 2024. He was stopped by hotel staff at the time. He would allegedly try this again, unsuccessfully, in January 2025.
Approximately two days after his alleged illegal visit to North Sentinel, Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov was arrested on Monday, March 31. "The American citizen was presented before the local court after his arrest," Dhaliwal said. He added that Polyakov is "now on a three-day remand for further interrogation."
The director of Survival International, Caroline Pearce, issued a statement denouncing Polyakov's alleged visit to the Sentinelese territory.
"It beggars belief that someone could be that reckless and idiotic. This person's actions not only endangered his own life, they put the lives of the entire Sentinelese tribe at risk," Pearce wrote. "It's good news that the man in this latest incident has been arrested, but deeply disturbing that he was reportedly able to get onto the island in the first place."
Back in 2018, American missionary John Allen Chau was killed by the Sentinelese. Chau illegally visited the island in an attempt to convert the tribe to Christianity.
