"Shelter Music Group, ZZ Top's management, confirms drummer Frank Beard has paused his role in the Elevation Tour," the post reads. "He's addressing a health concern requiring immediate focus."
The tour kicked off March 5, featuring Beard with bandmates Billy F Gibbons and Elwood Francis. Now, fellow Texan John Douglas will take the drum seat. Douglas, a percussionist and longtime band tech, has history with ZZ Top. He filled in for Beard in 2002 during an appendectomy in Paris. Their close ties make him a natural fit.
"Frank looks forward to a swift recovery," the statement concludes. Fans rallied with encouragement. "Prayers for a smooth surgery and complete healing," one commented. "Get well soon, Frank!" another chimed in. The outpouring reflects Beard's impact.
Band Marches On
ZZ Top launched the Elevation Tour this month. They started strong with two Alabama shows, followed by four in Florida, before Beard's departure. The itinerary continues with U.S. stops through March and April. Then, the band crosses the globe. They play Australia and New Zealand from April 29 to mid-May. After, they return to North America. Canadian shows are set for June and late August, keeping their momentum alive.
Formed in 1969, ZZ Top boasts a storied legacy. Beard drives the drums, Gibbons handles vocals and guitar, and Dusty Hill held down bass until his 2021 passing. Elwood Francis, 63, stepped in post-Hill. The trio earned three Grammy nods, delivering classics like "Sharp Dressed Man," "La Grange," "Gimme All Your Lovin'," and "Legs." Their sound blends grit and groove. Last summer, they toured Europe in 2024, thrilling crowds.
Their latest release, RAW ('That Little Ol' Band From Texas' Original Soundtrack), hit shelves in 2022. Beard's break interrupts a relentless run. Yet, Douglas ensures the beat goes on. Fans hold out hope for Beard's return. His absence underscores his vital role. For now, ZZ Top powers forward, adapting as they've done for decades.
