Patrick Mahomes Attends Grandfather's Funeral A Week After Super Bowl

Just a week after Patrick Mahomes, 29, played in the Super Bowl, he attended his grandfather's funeral. 78-year-old Randy Mahomes passed away on Friday, five days after the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Philadelphia Eagles on February 9.

Patrick Mahomes Spotted At Grandfather's Funeral After Super Bowl

Randy, Patrick's mom's father, died after battling an unknown illness on February 14. Patrick and his family attended his funeral the following Monday, February 17. Photos by the Daily Mail captured the moment when Patrick visited the funeral with his 24-year-old younger brother Jackson.

What makes the situation worse is knowing that before his team's blunder in the Super Bowl, the Mahomes knew Randy was very ill. Having to perform under the usual pressure is one thing, but performing during a family emergency is another.

Athlon Sports reported that Randy was in hospice care and was "hanging on" to watch his grandson play. We can't even fathom how difficult it must have been for Mahomes, especially after failing to take the winning prize.

Randi, Patrick's mother, announced the grandfather's death on Instagram in a heartfelt post. "Hard to find the words of holding my father's hand as he goes to Heaven," she wrote. "I know he's in a better place. I love you, Daddy. Well done, good and faithful servant!"

As the big game crept up, People reported that Randi didn't want to "bug him" with updates on his grandfather's health. She knew that Randy was ecstatic to watch his grandson play, and that's all that mattered at the time.

Randi described her father as always remembering "when the Super Bowl is" even during bad days. "I know that it has meant a lot to him," she added. "And I think he's hanging on because he wants to see his grandson do an amazing thing or just let him play."

Despite the Chiefs having one of their worst performances with a 40-22 loss, there's no doubt that Randy was proud of Patrick. Photos from the Daily Mail captured the football player chatting with his brother and guests before the service.
