'American Idol’ Contestant Doug Kiker, The Singing Garbage Man, Passes Away Unexpectedly

Sometimes contestants on American Idol make a big impression in viewers even if they don't make it all the way to the coveted finals. There is just something so ardent about them. Their talent and desire are plain for all to see. They have the gumption to stand in front of a national audience and sing, no easy feat. One of those people was Doug Kiker. He appeared on season 18 and was known as the singing garbage man. Sadly, per Taste Of Country, he has passed away at age 32.

Per the outlet, "Family shared the news, emphasizing how it was unexpected and they're unprepared to deal with it all." It definitely is a shocking and very tragic development. The cause of Kiker's death has not been made public at this time. Per TMZ, his fiancee, Valerie Cook, said that he died on Monday, March 10. Kiker was evidently in Denver, Colorado, at the time.

Angela Evans wrote this poignant tribute to her brother Doug on

Facebook. "It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the passing of my brother Douglas Kiker he was sooo loved and will be missed by so many! Your [sic] singing with the Angel's [sic] now Bubba Please pray for our family as we go threw [sic] this very difficult time."

William Kiker wrote on

Facebook, "Dear brother I just want you to know that know matter where you are you will always be my baby brother I know you are finally at piece I just wish I had more time with you so until I can see you again say hey to bubba for me and tell him I love him rest in peace Douglas Kiker my baby brother."

A GoFundMe Has Been Established

A GoFundMe was set up in Kiker's memory. So far, as of Thursday night, $1,398 has been raised. The goal is $4,500.

Kiker Sang A Rascal Flatts Song On 'Idol'

In 2020, Kiker performed "Bless the Broken Road" by Rascal Flatts on the show. Katy Perry reacted tearfully. His unusual background caught people's attention. Some folks sing in the shower. Kiker sang from the rear of his garbage truck. He and his fiancee shared two kids.

He Advanced To Hollywood

Kiker had the singing chops to get to the Hollywood phase of Idol. That was where his unlikely journey to stardom ended, however. Nevertheless, he made a virtual comeback for the finale to perform again.
