While performing at a chili cookoff in 2009, Jessica Simpson donned a pair of high-waisted jeans. She played confidently, clearly thinking she looked great. Looking back on the pictures, she did look good. But the celebrity gossip mill decided to sink its teeth into her and tear her apart.
There were a lot of comments about her appearance that fateful afternoon, and the perceived body shaming gave Jessica PTSD. "This picture that circulated and went worldwide broke my heart. Not the picture, necessarily, but the caption. Like, all the captions," she told Today.
Following the dreadful slew of comments on her outfit choice, she retired from the public eye for six months. The hurtful remarks made by sad and lonely people cut her deeply. Already suffering from bouts of alcoholism, and this was a tough time for Jessica Simpson.
Long Road To Recovery
Despite feeling ashamed of her outfit and taking it badly, Jessica Simpson is making a healthy recovery. She has left behind the booze and is loud and proud in a bikini on her Instagram. "I have gained and lost 100lbs 3,x so I never thought this moment could or would happen, but I'm finally spring breakin' wearin' a BIKINI!!!!!! Hard work, Determination, self-love. I enjoyed a good, proud cry today."

She has spoken out about her journey through drinking, divorce, and another child. It seems she is getting back into the swing of things. We may be about to see a new era of Jessica Simpson with an older, wiser, and more mature approach to her music.
Even though her outfit was publicly torn apart, Jessica Simpson runs a clothing line. Her brand was researched and put together by her, and it features not a single pair of 'Mum Jeans.'
Whatever happens, I don't think she will be wearing any high-waisted jeans again anytime soon.
