Carrie Underwood Reveals 'Extremely Tough Spot' She Was In On 'American Idol'

Carrie Underwood is not a fan of one part of her role as a judge on American Idol. The 42-year-old reveals she dislikes the part where she and fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie have to send the aspiring singers home.

"My night was paling in comparison to the contestants that are no longer a part of the competition,
Underwood tells Entertainment Tonight. "But it is an extremely tough spot to be in, and I really just wanted to pass the buck off to Luke and Lionel, and be like, 'Can you just make the decision?' But I feel like we're all on the same page."

Underwood doesn't take lightly the role she has in the lives of the contestants, even now that the show is up to the fans to vote.

"Pros and cons to both," Underwood admits. "It's nerves everywhere, but different kinds of nerves. Because at the end of the day, I'm still here. I don't take it lightly that we have people's futures in our hands, and I really would like just America to vote. I don't want to be put in that position again."

For all of the heartache, Underwood is still enjoying her first season as a judge, 20 years after winning Season 4.

"It's a lot of fun," says the singer. "More than anything, I love to just be a fan. And I love sitting out in the audience, and when there's a song I know and everybody's having fun with it, it's fun for me. So I'm having a blast."

The End Of An Era For Carrie Underwood

It's unclear what Underwood will do after this season of American Idol ends. The mother of two only has a few dates on her calendar for the remainder of 2025, in part since she just bid farewell to her REFLECTION: The Las Vegas Residency, which began in 2021.

"REFLECTION has truly been one of the standout moments of my performing career thus far," Underwood says. "It is a production I am so very proud of and have had so much fun performing over the course of this residency these past 3+ years. I've loved being in Las Vegas where we've welcomed fans from all over the world who have come to see us.

"It's been so special to reflect on the first 20 years of this career I am so grateful for, and have loved being on stage with my band and all the performers every night," she adds.

Underwood is reportedly working on a new album.
