The Song That Taylor Swift Struggles To Connect With Now
Honestly, it makes sense that Taylor Swift wouldn't connect with all of her songs. After all, we all grow, change, and evolve throughout our lives. There are plenty of things that really resonated with me in high school that I don't connect with anymore. So why should we expect something different from celebrities. Just because a song was a hit, doesn't mean the artist will still love it 15 years down the line.
This is especially true for Ms. Taylor Swift who tends to write a lot of music around past lovers and breakups. I don't know about you but when I break up with someone I try to erase them from my present mindset — I feel like a song keeps the memory alive longer. But who am I to judge? While the star doesn't seem to cringe at any of her past relationships, or songs about them, she has admitted that she struggles to connect to one of her earliest songs.
That song was her debut single 'Tim McGraw' which she released back in 2006. Despite the title, the song is not about Tim McGraw. Instead, the song is about her first love — a summer romance with a boyfriend who then moved away. The song features the classic country elements of early Taylor Swift, however looking back it doesn't resonate with the pop star now.
Why It No Longer Resonates
When speaking with NPR, Swift had this to say about her love song. "'Tim McGraw,' that song I don't really connect to as much," From there she explained, "I connect to it in the form of nostalgia, but that was a song about a first love."
While she hasn't stopped writing about her love life and relationships, she approaches them differently now. No longer is she the wide-eyed 15-year-old girl that is love struck by her first boyfriend. Instead, she tries to come at them with the maturity and growth of the 35-year-old woman that she is.
The star shared, "I'm in a very different place in my life right now, and I think you can only hope to grow so much, emotionally, that you can't necessarily connect to wide-eyed 15-year-old ideas of love anymore." Makes sense to me. Taylor Swift shared that her music is so personal to her that it is like "People have essentially gotten to read my diary for the last 10 years."
No wonder she no longer connects to some of her earlier songs, I know I don't connect to some of the things in my 15-year-old diary. Regardless, fans loved the song and continue to love the pop star's music. Keep on sharing Taylor Swift, it seems to be working well for you.
