Church is thrilled to be picked to give this address to the grads. He spoke with enthusiasm and gratitude of the opportunity. "Being asked to be the Commencement speaker at North Carolina is one of the greatest honors I've ever had. Being a Tar Heel 'born, bred, dead' and knowing what the school has meant to me and my family, it's surreal. To be able to be there and celebrate the future, the students at the University of North Carolina as they go onto their next journey, I'm honored to do it, and I can't wait to see everybody there."

Church Is a Longtime Tar Heel Supporter

The country music singer has been a demonstrably loyal Tar Heel fan. Per the outlet, the North Carolina native called off a concert three years ago just to be present when Duke battled Carolina in the NCAA's Final Four. Church was also a spectator, along with former hoops superstar Michael Jordan, when football coach Bill Belichick "made his debut on the sidelines."

He Pitched in To Help After Hurricane Helene

Last year, Hurricane Helene left a path of unimaginable destruction in North Carolina. Church and fellow country star Luke Combs raised more than $24 million. Those funds assisted those impacted by the fierce storm. But Church has not finished his humanitarian efforts yet. His non-profit organization, Chief Cares, per the outlet, "will now provide mortgage-free homes...to storm victims,...educators, healthcare workers, first responders, and others who serve the region every day."

The singer explained the impetus behind the initiative. "We're not just building homes—we're investing in the people that will carry this community forward for generations. This isn't about short-term solutions. It's about long-term hope."

Chancellor Lee H. Roberts expressed his respect and admiration for Church. "A true legend, he has shaped the music industry and inspired generations of artists and audiences alike. His significant efforts to help rebuild western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene reflect his steadfast commitment to his hometown and our state."
