“We Didn’t Start out Too Good”: Gretchen Wilson Remembers Fight With Male Singer

Blake Shelton said he selected Gretchen Wilson for the new singing competition show, The Road, because he knew she wouldn't "take any crap" from anyone.

Turns out he was more on the nose with that description than we were led to believe.

In a recent interview, Wilson recalled an incident with an up-and-coming Texas singer (at the time) that led to arguments between the two.

Once Upon a Time...

At the time of the incident, Cody Johnson was just getting started in his career. He and the 52-year-old "Here for the Party" singer were at odds about how things would work on stage.

"We didn't start out too good, me and Cody," Wilson said. "We had to share the stage, and there were little arguments over who was going to get to use the entirety of the stage and stuff."

Wilson added that neither of them was in control of the situation.

"It wasn't he and me personally, it was our people," she explained. "I'm not even sure if he's aware of that."

Do Gretchen Wilson and Cody Johnson Get Along Now?

Despite their rocky meeting years ago, Wilson says that she and the "On My Way to You" artist now get along. "We've just played a show together recently. I was so glad that he came out and watched my show," she said.

"I got to hang out with him and talk to him for a little while. He didn't bring it up, so I don't think he remembers it. Thank goodness, because it was like, 'What ignorant stuff to be fighting over, really.' But, when you're first coming up, that little bit of stage matters."

Wilson added that she thinks Johnson could "absolutely" take home the award for CMA Entertainer of the Year on Nov. 19. He's competing against award show host Lainey Wilson, Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, and Morgan Wallen.

Wilson Also Thinks Country Music Men Are "Timid" Nowadays

The interviewer asked Wilson whether she thinks "there are too many sissies in country music," and she said she sees it more among the males than the females.

"It just seems like more men are timid nowadays than women are," said Wilson. "Maybe that's just where we're at in our world, but it does seem like women are a lot more boisterous than they used to be, unafraid, and they are ready to kick the doors down and make something happen. Men seem to be standing around asking for permission."

She added, "I'm not afraid to say it, we've kinda squashed the male demographic as a whole. If I had a son, I'd be a little bit afraid right now in today's world."
