Boston Blue is set to air in the fall of this year. And the closer we get, the more production is going to ramp up. Donnie Wahlberg, returning as Danny Reagan, shared a photo on his Instagram story a little behind-the-scenes photo that has made this new series all the more real.
The story (which has since expired but was captured by Pop Culture) was a photo of the pilot script, with both his and Sonequa Martin-Green's name cards. In a caption, he wrote, "A new chapter."
It appears that the pilot was written by Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis. Although they had no involvement with Blue Bloods, they pitched the storyline with JBTV to CBS Studios and CBS.
The episode was directed by Anthony Hemingway, who also wasn't involved with Blue Bloods.
Donnie Wahlberg shared no other details of the script or production; his snippet shows that production has kicked off.
Although Boston Blue is a spin-off, CBS has been quick to call it a "universe expansion." This has some implications for the show.
Don't Expect 'Boston Blue' To Be 'Blue Bloods' 2.0
Many fans online argue that Boston Blue is a waste of time, and that they should simply have continued Blue Bloods. However, it's clear that the showrunners want to expand the franchise. And by ending the original show, they have opened the door for the next stage of the story.
Although Boston Blue features Danny Reagan, we should expect lots of changes. With new writers and a new director, and with Sean Reagan being recast, they simply don't want to do more of the same. The team want to do something new.
So expect a different show that is set in the same continuity. Blue Bloods is over, and Boston Blue is the first of likely many series that expand on the story.
Donnie Wahlberg's use of "new chapter" further solidifies that this is a new direction in all aspects of the show.
