Springsteen Paid Respectful Tribute to Ely

The legendary rocker wrote warmly about Ely on social media. He posted this on Instagram. "Over here, we're deeply saddened by the loss of Joe Ely, a singular American singer, great musician and great artist. I was lucky enough to count Joe as a true friend and I will miss that voice and his companionship. Our hearts go out to his wonderful wife Sharon and the family. We've lost an American classic."

The Boss Gave Ely an Award Earlier This Year

Earlier in 2025, per the outlet, Bruce Springsteen gave Ely the American Music Honors Award at the Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music. The Boss described Ely's unique sound with precision, reverence and respect. "It's got that slight Southern country twang, it's got a hint of rockabilly. It's got the depth and emotion of Johnny Cash and it's as deeply authentic as his Texas roots."

The Two Worked Together

Springsteen and Ely performed together and recorded together as well. The lauded pair did a track called "Odds of the Blues" on Ely's LP Driven to Drive. Eleven years ago at a concert in Houston, Springsteen and the E Street Band joined forces with Ely on stage to perform timeless crowd-pleasers like "Lucille" and "Great Balls of Fire."
