Why Carrie Underwood Limits Her Kids Technology

In an interview with TODAY with Jenna & Friends, Carrie Underwood sat and talked all things music, family, and life. In one of the segments, she was asked about how she handles her children and the ever-growing space of technology.

"It's such a battle," the star admitted. I feel like so many parents feel seen with just that statement alone. After all, technology can have wonderful educational purposes. Not to mention that once your child reaches those pre-teen stages the "When can I get a phone?" conversation will never end.

How do you weigh their desires versus the potential repercussions of the decision? Carrie Underwood admits that one of the main reasons that she limits Isaiah's, 9, and Jacob's, 5, technology use is because of the changes she sees in them when they use it.

"I notice if they kind of watch too much TV, they have an attitude shift," the country singer admitted. She continued explaining how they seemed more active and less attentive. "Why are you moving, what are we doing?" she would wonder. Then she would realize and say to herself, "Ohhhhhhh...." recognizing that it was a reaction to the television.

Additional Threats

In addition to their attitude shifts, Carrie Underwood also worries about the dangers of social media. With more and more stories of bullying and online predators, I can't say I blame her. Suicide rates, eating disorders, and a myriad of health issues are steadily increasing, and many experts say social media is to blame. Then you have the risk of being exposed to sexual content and child predators. The Ethics & Public Policy Center states that ," nearly 1 in 3 teen girls have been approached by adults asking for nudes on social media."

They continue that "They [meaning children of the younger generations] have become dopamine robots." Due to their growing up online, "They don't know how to form real-life relationships. The ever-present distraction and escape mean they don't have to confront real-life disappointments and emotions."

For those reasons, Underwood wants to keep her children away from phones "as long as possible." Also, it seems like she is not the only one. The star shared that there has been "a whole grassroots initiative" at her sons' school. "A bunch of parents are getting together and discussing how we can keep our kids away from technology — especially social media," the singer shared.

It's Not All Bad

Although Carrie Underwood willingly admits the fear and dangers of technology —as well as why she limits her kids' technology—she admits that it is not all bad. "They have learned a lot from different television programs and movies," she admitted.

So how do we find the balance? Allowing them to use the tool of technology for education and good purposes, without allowing them to fall victim to the dangers of it? It is important to know the programs and channels that you are allowing your children to watch. As well as how they are spending their screen time.

Instead of allowing them to aimlessly scroll, have dedicated time for screen time. Additionally, during that time they can watch only approved programs. There are a plethora of educational YouTube channels, Podcasts, and games that have wonderful benefits and teach important concepts.

The key ingredient is being aware of what your child is consuming and ensuring that they do not consume too much.
