As part of the Idol to Icon series over on her YouTube channel, Carrie Underwood is going back to her time as a contestant now that she's a judge in the latest season. Going on a trip through memory lane with her fans is a delightful idea, and those who watched her on their screens 20 years ago will have fond memories too.
In the latest installment, Carrie Underwood goes over her Hollywood Week performance. There, she encounters an awkward moment that haunts her all these years later.
Some might remember it well, as it was a moment that went somewhat viral back in the day. During the original episode, Ryan Seacrest (I know, he has been hosting for a long time...) introduced Carrie Underwood and spoke to her.
Bringing up her farm lifestyle and rural upbringing, Seacrest brought up that she'd be more interested in the trees than the sidewalk and Hollywood sign.
"Any of the stars? Have you seen stars?" he asked her, referencing celebrities and the famous. They're in Hollywood, after all.
That's when Underwood replied, "It's been pretty cloudy."
Carrie Underwood's Adorable Misunderstanding Still Haunts Her
Seacrest clarified what he meant, and she chuckled in realization. "No, just you."
This moment, apparently, keeps her up at night.
Pausing the video to comment, Carrie Underwood admitted, "This moment has haunted me, literally for 20 years."
"People still bring it up. It just was what it was. We were talking about buildings, palm trees, and things that were outside, and all of a sudden he threw me a curveball," she explained. "My brain was still in outdoor mode."
Apparently, people at the time thought the moment was staged, but it was a genuine misunderstanding according to Underwood. I mean, it would have been a perfect moment to manufacture.
"I'm sad to say it was not scripted."
We all have our cringy demons that rob us of our sleep. I wonder if Underwood and Seacrest have ever mentioned that moment again since her winning American Idol.
