The singer sat down with Jarrod Morris on The Jarrod Morris Vibe podcast, where they spoke about a range of topics. An earlier conversation they had was on his relationship with alcohol, and how he feels being over a year sober.
He admitted that he doesn't "remember large chunks" of his career due to drinking nonstop. "Years, I don't remember some years."
"I just drank, I drank all of it, all the time. I woke up, started drinking, I'd drink until I passed out, show or not."
To give an example of just how badly alcohol impacted his consciousness, Cody Jinks told a story. "We walked into a venue up in Indiana, right after I had gotten sober, and I was talking to my stage manager," he began.
"I walked in, I go, 'This is a cool room, this will be a good show.' He goes, 'Yeah, we played here four times.'" He was beside himself. "'Huh, alright. Well, it's gonna be a good one, I'm sober now, so I'll remember.'"
Cody Jinks Opens Up On Why He Quit Drinking
Thankfully, his alcoholism lay the final straw back a few years ago. On August 9, 2023, he knew he had to make a change.
"My kids saw me fall down drunk for the last time, actually. I never drank again. I woke up the next day and I was like, 'This is a problem,'" he recalled. "Cold turkey, right in the middle of a tour, I went back out on the road."
It is impressive how his body didn't give up going completely cold turkey like that. "I had to learn how to stay sober on a tour bus, I took my first plane ride sober when I was 43. Did my first show sober, everything, recorded my first song sober."
After drinking for 24 years, it's no wonder he's become a changed man. In the episode, he says how he's become more emotional, happier, and how appreciative he is of his wife for sticking by him. What a story.
