The Texas Heritage Songwriters Association just announced the good news. The ceremony will take place on February 21 in Austin, Texas.
It's fitting that Cook and Gattis are becoming members along with Strait. It's Cook who penned Strait's "There's A New Kid In Town" and "Her Only Bad Habit Is Me." He's also written songs for Brooks & Dunn, Conway Twitty, Keith Whitley and more.
Gattis passed away in 2023. His songwriting credits include Strait's "I Got A Car" and "Let It Go." He's also written songs for Charlie Robison, Kenny Chesney and more.
George Strait and Miranda Lambert's Songwriting Credits
Strait is relatively new to songwriting. For most of his career, he happily recorded songs written by otheres, transforming them and making them his own. But in the 2000s, he started writing more, and including them on his records. Among the songs Strait has written are "Living for the Night," "I Believe" and "The Weight of the Bad," among others.
"For a lot of years, I put songwriting on the back burner," Strait tells Cowboys & Indians magazine. "I've had so much luck and have been so successful finding material from other writers that I really got lazy about it. Writing, for me, is not easy. It requires a lot of time and can be pretty intense."
Strait has recorded plenty of songs by his good friend, Dean Dillon. As he delved into songwriting, he also leaned on the talents of his own son, Bubba.
"I really enjoyed being able to write with Dean and Bubba," Strait explains. "Dean has been a big part of my recording career, and we've been friends for many years. And seeing my son writing on his own, and being able to write with him, was just the greatest thing."
Lambert has, for most of her career, penned many of her own hits. Among Lambert's numerous songwriting credits are "If I Was A Cowboy," "Famous In A Small Town," "Baggage Claim," her recent "Run" single, and many more.
