The Hollywood Director That Bruce Springsteen Always Wanted To Work With

Many stars and famous singers have a wish list of the people they would love to work with. Maybe it's another actor or actress, a fellow singer, or a director. Sometimes their wish comes true. For Bruce Springsteen, the person he reportedly wanted to work with was the late David Lynch. A true creative genius, Lynch sadly passed away on January 16, 2025, at age 78, four days before his 79th birthday. He was the incandescent spark behind such offbeat successes as the TV series Twin Peaks, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, and Mulholland Drive.

Why Did Bruce Springsteen Want To Collaborate With David Lynch?

Far Out Magazine ventured to explain the reason that Springsteen supposedly wanted to work with Lynch. "One of these visionaries was David Lynch, as his films became not only visual spectacles but sonic triumphs. His use of sound throughout his films and how he could incorporate songs into scenes elevated his movies in a way that other directors could only dream of." Hence the possible artistic kinship between the great singer and the bold, boundary-breaking director.

There Was One Song That Bruce Springsteen Supposedly Would Have Liked To Be In A David Lynch Film

That song was "The Way." Springsteen said, per the outlet, "The main reason it's hidden [on an album titled The Promise] is because I never liked it. I would like to see it placed in a David Lynch film over a sexually perverse scene. That, to me, is its righteous home." Hmmm....It looks like Springsteen really gave this some thought. Unfortunately, now that David Lynch is gone, we will never know what Springsteen's cinematic vision for "The Way" might have actually been like.

Springsteen Did Have Success Writing Music For Film

The Boss understands how music and film interact in support of each other. One superb example is the 1993 movie Philadelphia, starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. Springsteen wrote and sang the song "Streets of Philadelphia" for the film. He earned an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Other notable artists on that soundtrack included Neil Young, Spin Doctors, opera singer Maria Callas, Peter Gabriel, and Indigo Girls.
