Jelly Roll Scores 7th No. 1 Hit With Painfully Honest Song, 'Liar'

Jelly Roll is back at the top of the charts, for the seventh time. The Nashville native has a No. 1 hit with "Liar." The song is a painfully honest tune that he wrote with Ben Johnson, Ashley Gorley, and Taylor Phillips. "Liar" is from Jelly Roll's latest Beautifully Broken album, released in October.

Jelly Roll officially released "Liar" in August. The song says in part, "You ain't nothing but a liar / Yeah, I walk right out of the fire / Yeah, you try to keep me down / Try to put me underground / But I'm only going higher." It's a personal song for Jelly Roll. The 40-year-old has been open about his struggles early in his life. His hardships led to time in and out of prison, and him gaining a lot of weight -- weight he is now trying to lose.

"A little bit over a year ago, I literally struggled to walk down my hill to the mailbox," he says in a video he posted on YouTube. "It was really bad."

Despite all he had been through, Jelly Roll knew he wanted better for himself, his family and his fans.

"I had let myself get to a point of just being really absolutely disgusted with myself," he continues. "I'd spent three or four years 'pretending' to try and work on my weight, and on my health. But, I never actually really dug my heels in the ground and did the work."

Jelly Roll in 2025

Jelly Roll hasn't revealed what his next single will be. Fortunately, whatever it is, he will have plenty of chances to play the song, and all of his other hits, live. The singer-songwriter will serve as the opening act on Post Malone's Big Ass Stadium Tour. It's surprising news even for Jelly Roll, whose original plans were to take most of the year off of the road.

"It didn't even seem real how fast the tour came together," Jelly Roll tells Nashville Lifestyles. "Post hit me and was like, 'We should tour.' And I'm like, 'I'm always in, anytime.' Sure enough, the next day Live Nation hit management and said they wanted to do Jelly on his tour. From us agreeing to it, to announcing it was like 12 days, it was crazy."

"What's even funnier is I planned on taking next year off [from touring]," he adds. "So, the cool thing is if you wanted to see me next year, you can now. It worked out perfectly. Go Post; shoutout to Post."

Thankfully, fans will get plenty of chances to see Jelly Roll this year. He continues his Beautifully Broken Tour in Canada as well. Find "Liar" and all of Jelly Roll's music at JellyRoll.com.
