Jimmy Buffett's Ashes Were Quietly Sneaked on Stage at His Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction

Jimmy Buffett, the beloved "Margaritaville" singer, died in 2023 at the age of 76. His music typified beachy good times and rollicking fun in the sun. Many of his tracks encapsulate his gloriously laid-back lifestyle.

Buffett was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2024, with something of his in someone's pocket so he could be there, at least in a sense. According to People via The Howard Stern Show, country crooner Kenny Chesney, a Buffett buddy, shared that the ashes were brought on stage in a supremely hush hush manner. (According to the outlet, Buffett's family reportedly approved.)

Chesney Dished About the Ashes

The country star recalled that he, Mac McAnally, and James Taylor performed at the ceremony honoring Buffett. McAnally was in the Coral Reefer Band of Buffett's "...McAnally was given some of Buffett's ashes by his daughter Savannah," per the outlet.

Chesney said, "We were backstage, we were sitting back there warming up, trying to figure out our parts and stuff, and Mac comes up to me and he goes, 'Look at this.' And it was a small urn. And he had Jimmy's ashes in his coat pocket. So Jimmy's ashes were in Mac McAnally's coat pocket on stage with us as he was getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So even after he passed, Jimmy found a way to join the party,"

The Three Singers Combined on a Sweet Tribute to Buffett

Taylor, Chesney, and McAnally sang a memorable Buffett hit, "Come Monday," to honor him. At the time, Taylor said, "We're three old friends of Jimmy Buffett, and we miss him. This is a song of his that we like a lot." The public likes it a lot, too.

Chesney Thought Very Highly of His Friend

Per People, Chesney mused of Buffett in November, "It's surreal that you become friends with that person and collaborate with that person in the studio and have that person just really inspire you. And that's what Jimmy was for me. You have people that create space for you to do your own thing, and Jimmy was one of those people."

His marvelous happy-go-lucky attitude and numerous signature songs were incredible. They will keep Jimmy Buffett aglow in our hearts and minds for a long time to come.
