The famous country singer sat down with Joel Madden on the Artist Friendly podcast to have a good chat, and early on, they talk about some of the hardest roadblocks Wilson faced in her early career. One of which is a doozy of a relationship horror story.
Wilson is brief with the mention and doesn't go into details, but it's enough to make you say 'oooh.'
"I was dating a boy who got a girl pregnant," she mentions in passing, as though that isn't its own separate story. That's almost as bad as it gets in young relationships. She never said how long she was dating the boy, but it can't have been too long. However, it left her truly heartbroken.
From this, however, Lainey Wilson has gotten stronger. Although, thankfully now she has boyfriend Duck Hodges to rely on.
"I learned how to like just embrace the heartbreak, cuz I'm like 'is this happening to me? Am I getting punked? Is it is it happening just so I can have something to write about?'" she recalled her thoughts at the time.
These would have been especially intense, considering she was mourning the loss of her dear friend and mentor at the time, family friend Jerry Cupit.
Wilson Really Didn't Have It Easy Starting Her Career
While her boyfriend was knocking someone else up, Wilson had recently suffered the loss of her mentor, someone who written songs with her every day for the past three years at that point.
In the 1970s, Lainey Wilson's grandfather gave producer Jerry Cupit some money to help him move to Nashville and pursue his dreams. To repay this kindness, Cupit supported Wilson when she made her way down to Nashville in her camper that she was living in at the time.
They worked together tremendously, and he let her park her camper in his studio's parking lot for free as she found her footing.
In 2014, however, Cupit suddenly died, leaving Wilson reeling with grief. And her boyfriend just had to go and do what he did during this time.
Makes the situation a whole lot worse, right?
"When it rains, it pours," she said of the situation. "It was a shock to everybody and I had to start over from square one."
