Lukas Nelson Gave up Smoking, Just Like His Dad Willie: “I Was So Into Weed!”

Lukas Nelson recently announced during a podcast interview that since he stopped smoking herb, he feels "really great."

"Like father, like son," is how the saying goes. And that phrase more than applies to country singer Lukas Nelson and his father, Willie.

While this common ground is true in the music business, it also extends to their approach to cannabis. The news began in January, when the elder Nelson told Forbes that edibles are the only way he can partake anymore.

"Well, I can't smoke anything anymore," Willie said. "My lungs have already said, 'Don't do that.'"

The news was surprising to many. The "On the Road Again" singer has his own line of cannabis. Willie has also smoked with everyone from Snoop Dogg to Kacey Musgraves and even President Jimmy Carter's son on the roof of the White House.

Lukas Nelson Made a Change for the Sober

Lukas has also been known to partake. However, as he recently announced on the Nashville Now podcast, hosted by Rolling Stone Senior Editor Joseph Hudak, the younger Nelson began developing habits during the pandemic that helped him change his life.

He began a routine that included 100 push-ups and meditation.  Then he cut back on drinking and smoking herb. Of the two, he said quitting weed was "a lot harder for me." In his prime, Lukas would smoke at least six joints a day.

"Weed really helped me distract myself from things I was feeling inside that I probably had to face," Lukas said. "Making myself face those things and face parts of myself that I don't like was a difficult choice. But I did it and I'm glad I did it because now I feel really great."

Lukas Hasn't Gone Completely Sober

Lukas told Hudak there is still one thing he won't give up.

"I'll still do mushrooms," he said. "Once a year, twice a year, I'll do mushrooms and check in with myself. But I don't do anything habitually more that I don't like. If I'm going to have a habit, it's going to be something that's good for me."

When asked by Hudak if it was hard for him to give up weed as the son of one of the most famous smokers in the world, he said his relationship with Willie is still the same.

"My dad respects individuality," Lukas adds. "He respects being yourself. He and I both now don't smoke weed, so that's great. I don't think it mattered to him either way..."
