According to a report by CBS News, the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon as crowds gathered for Picnic Day. Per UC Davis, Picnic Day is one of the largest student-run events in the nation. It's a long-standing tradition from 1909 and now has an annual attendance exceeding 70,000.
CBS explains that police received reports of the first shot at around 3 PM at Community Park. The shots injured three people: two teenagers and a 24-year-old woman. Emergency Services took all three victims to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities reportedly cleared the park after the shooting so investigators could gather evidence.
There was reportedly already a significant police presence at the park owing to the large crowds. The City of Davis stated that early information indicates that the incident "was not motivated by a desire to randomly harm community members."
Per a report by ABC10, Little League games were running at the time. Players and families hit the ground and evacuated the area after they heard the gunfire.
The Shooting Suspect or Suspects Remain At Large
Police were unable to provide any details on the suspect or motive owing to the massive crowds at the park. Footage shared on Reddit shows police entering the park as hundreds of panicked parkgoers frantically run from the area. Police say there were so many people in the park and so many conflicting statements that it makes it tough to identify who fired a weapon.
Per a report by Fox 40, investigators are still combing the park for clues. In a community message, the City said, "Due to the large number of potential witnesses and evidence, the investigative process will take time. As the department works through this complex investigation, we ask for patience." In an interview with CBS, an officer told the outlet, "This really is an uncommon event for us, this particular situation. In my 18 years, we've never had anything like this. You have a whole lot of people who are scared, and they are calling the police."
