It was originally based on the bestselling book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder published in the 1930s. The story revolves around the Ingalls family who live on a Minnesota farm in the late 19th century. Now that it has been just over 50 years since the show premiered, Netflix could help make the stories likable for modern-day viewers.
'Little House On The Prairie' Reboot Coming To Netflix
Rebecca Sonnenshine is spearheading the reboot as the showrunner and executive producer. She's best known for working on hit shows like The Boys and The Vampire Diaries. As Little House on the Prairie was popular amongst children, Sonnenshine may have to tackle this project differently.
Luckily, Sonnenshine revealed she is a lifelong fan of the series. "I fell deeply in love with these books when I was 5 years old," she said to Netflix. "They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new audience."
Netflix revealed some more details on the genres this new adaptation will embody. It describes the new show as "part family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West."
This reboot plans to put a spotlight on the "struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier." If you're a fan of shows like Virgin River or Sweet Magnolias, Netflix promises that this new adaptation is something you'll enjoy.
Helping Sonnenshine with the project as executive producers are Joy Gorman Wettels, Dana Fox, Susanna Fogel, and even Trip Friendly. From Friendly Family Productions, Trip's father Ed Friendly originally produced the Little House show. Jinny Howe, the VP of drama series for Netflix, also mentioned how optimistic she was about this reboot.
"Little House on the Prairie has captured the hearts and imaginations of so many fans around the world, and we're excited to share its enduring themes of hope and optimism with a fresh take on this iconic story," she said to the Hollywood Reporter. "Rebecca's vision threads the needle with an emotional depth that will delight both new and existing fans of this beloved classic."
According to the Hollywood Reporter, they have been working on this adaptation for several years now. Paramount TV Studies and Anonymous Content began the project in 2020. Wettels, Fox, and Friendly have also been with the project from the start.
