91-Year-Old Sparks Welfare Check After Family Missed Calls, Found Playing Video Games

A welfare check on a 91-year-old woman in Ohio took a surprising turn when police found her safe and playing video games.

A 91-year-old woman in Westlake, Ohio, sparked concern after failing to answer repeated calls from family members.

As worry grew, her family contacted authorities, prompting a welfare check at her home.

But when officers arrived, what they discovered was far from the worst-case scenario.

Ohio Welfare Check Leads to Unexpected Discovery

Westlake police officers were dispatched to the home on the evening of April 9 after both family members and authorities were unable to reach the elderly resident.

After multiple unanswered calls, concern quickly escalated.

However, upon entering the home, officers found the woman safe and well inside her bedroom.

Rather than in distress, she had been fully absorbed in playing video games.

According to police, she had been focused on beating her personal record and simply missed the incoming calls.

"Everyone's a little concerned she was missing these contacts," Westlake police Captain Jerry Vogel said. "Turned out to be all OK. Everyone got a good laugh out of it."

Program Designed to Protect Seniors Proves Its Value

While the situation ended on a light-hearted note, it also highlighted the importance of regular welfare checks.

Officers recorded dispatch audio during the visit, though footage was not released to protect the woman's identity.

"We're with her now. She's playing video games in her bedroom," officers said on the dispatch audio, via KLTV.

Police added that the woman was "thankful" for the visit.

The 91-year-old is part of Westlake's "Are You Okay" program, a service designed to check in on elderly residents through daily phone calls.

"It really is a nice service that has saved lives in the past," Vogel added.

"Westlake Police Department works in conjunction with the Westlake Center for Community Services to manage the free home check calling service Are You Okay? for senior citizens and other qualified residents," the police department's website reads.

"Participants in the city receive a daily call to check on their welfare. If the call is not answered, the Police Department is notified and an officer is dispatched to the home to conduct a personal check-in visit."

Earlier in 2026, the program proved vital when another participant fell inside her home and was unable to get back up, with the daily check-in helping ensure she received assistance.
