Southern Grocery Chain Named Best In The Nation Over Walmart

The Costco Guys might have something to say about it, but apparently, H-E-B from Texas is the best grocery chain in the US.

Of the 72 grocery chains in the US, H-E-B came out on top, beating such giants as Walmart and Trader Joe's. The survey company dunnhumby has been doing these competitions for eight years now. Although H-E-B is only a regional grocery chain, it stands head and shoulders above the rest as the best.

Over 11,000 people were asked about their preferences when it comes to that all-important grocery shop. There are five core elements that need to be scored when claiming the number one spot for the best grocery chain in the US. These are

  • Price, Promotions, and Rewards,
  • Quality
  • Digital
  • Operations
  • Speed and Convenience

To take the number one spot means hitting targets on all of these factors.

Big Changes For Big Groceries

This past year has been a turbulent one for the top grocery chain lists. There have been a few climbers and a fall from grace for one of the big players in the game

Lidl, the international grocery sweetheart, has taken an incredible climb of 14 spots, to take the 17th position. Honestly, I only expect to see it gain more places over the years too. In the rest of the world, it is a favorite among every demographic.

A surprising demotion came for capitalist giant Amazon, as it finally lost its podium position. For the first time in eight years, it is not considered one of the top three best grocery chains in the US. This is in part due to the Digital aspect of the ranking rubric falling from importance. It's good to see the retail monopoly of Amazon being shaken.

Amazon now sits uncomfortably in sixth spot, with the top three retailers all being regional ones. This is an interesting turn of events and points toward an interesting change in people's grocery shopping needs. Rather than going for the do-it-all faceless corporation of Amazon, many are instead heading to somewhere a little more local.

Before you know it, people might actually start shopping local. Can you imagine!
