For many, I'm sure it's hard to think that it's been two decades with the country quintet. Their signature sound is enjoyed by millions every month. To celebrate their upcoming milestone, on May 23, they'll be dropping the Outrun album.
The lead single, "Outrun," has been released a month early, however, for our listening pleasure. And what a pleasure it is.
"Outrun" is both a murder ballad and a getaway thriller. As you listen to the evocative lyrics that suggest a dirty deed has gone down, you'll be tapping your feet to the racey rhythm. Although this a tale that's been told before, the SteelDrivers tell it so well here.
You can listen to "Outrun" below. The song is available on streaming platforms now.
"Outrun" Was Put Together At The Very Last Minute
The track was penned by SteelDriver's own Tammy Rogers and Matt Dame, as well as long-time co-writer Leslie Satcher. It turns out that the lead single was the last to get written, and it was written in record time.
In a statement shared with WOC, Rogers tells of how "Outrun" was cobbled together.
"I happened to run into [Satcher] the weekend before we were scheduled to go into the studio and told her we didn't have any 'Leslie songs' on the upcoming record," she said. "She made the time to get together and 'Outrun' was written in about an hour and a half!"
You wouldn't think such a narratively-driven song was plucked from their minds so quickly. I suppose that's why they're celebrating 20 years of making music.
Mandolinist Brent Truitt added that "Outrun" is his favorite song from the album. "'Outrun' has all the elements that will likely elevate it to a SteelDriver classic in short order," he believes.
The single also pays tribute to Mike Henderson, who's credited as the founding member. He sadly passed a few years ago. "I lovingly refer to Mike as the architect of the band," Rogers said. "Because he's the one in the beginning that called us all together. Everybody respected everybody else, and that's what created our sound and what makes it so unique."
It's a fun song, and I'm sure it'll be beloved by SteelDriver fans everywhere.
