Why Is Charley Crockett Willing To Give Up His Grammy Nom?

It's difficult for a musician to be recognized for their work, but Charley Crockett says his forfeit his Best Traditional Country Album nom.

Several musicians have withdrawn their music from Grammy Awards consideration in recent years. This year, Morgan Wallen famously chose not to submit his record-breaking album I'm the Problem for the 2026 edition. Recently, Charley Crockett received a nomination for Best Traditional Country Album for Dollar a Day. However, in a social media post, he announced he would be willing to give up the honor.

Why would the "Crucified Son" singer do such a thing? The details are below.

Has Anyone Ever Given up Their Grammy Nom?

Three nominees for the 2021 Grammy Award for Best Children's Music Album asked to be removed from the list. Alastair Moock & Friends, the Okee Dokee Brothers, and Dog on Fleas cited the lack of diversity in the nominations list as the reason.

This happened around the same time as the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and the protests that followed as a result.

"After this year, to have an all-white slate of nominees seemed really tone-deaf," Moock shared with NPR.

Is Charlie Crockett Protesting Something?

While known for speaking out on social issues, Crockett isn't necessarily protesting anything by offering to withdraw his Grammy nomination. He just thinks another artist is more deserving of the honor.

"Volunteering to give up my nomination with the @recordingacademy to the @turnpiketroubadours who not only earned the right with Price Of Admission, but for which without @felkersongs I might not have ever even shown up on the map to be nominated in the first place," Crockett wrote on social media over the weekend. "And besides, Evan Felker's the best damn songwriter of all of us. See, Texas and Oklahoma can get along."

Crockett then explained how Felker helped him get on the map.

"I was standing out at Gruene Hall handing out CDs on a street corner 'cause I couldn't get into the show," Crockett shared. "Handed a guy a CD, his name was Evan Felker. I didn't know who he was at the time, but he was the frontman for the Turnpike Troubadours.

"He took it home and listened to it with his then-girlfriend, now-wife. Lo and behold, his agent, Jon Folk called me up and started booking me"

This year's nomination for Best Traditional Country Album is Crockett's second. He's part of some pretty elite company this year. Dollar A Day is nominated alongside Lukas Nelson's American Romance, Willie Nelson's Oh What a Beautiful World, Margo Price's Hard Headed Woman, and Zach Top's Ain't in it For My Health.
