The Insane Way Willie Nelson Says That He Stopped Smoking Cigarettes

Leave it to Willie Nelson, everybody's favorite music outlaw, to figure out a way to quit smoking. Not just any way, but a unique one. He shared it with NPR in 2012. "I had gotten up to two, maybe three, packs a day. And my lungs were bothering me and I'd had pneumonia two or three times...And so I took a pack of Chesterfields and took all the Chesterfields out, rolled up 20 big fat ones and put it in there, and I haven't smoked a cigarette since then."

That was an ingenious way to get the job done! Smoking cessation has never been more clever.

Willie Nelson Even Penned A Witty Song Called 'Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die'

Well, okay, Willie! Whatever works for you! It was clear to Nelson that he needed to give smoking a rest. Despite the fact that he apparently liked it a lot. He even wrote a song called "Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die." Nelson and Snoop Dogg did a duet of it on his 90th birthday bash program on PBS. A rollicking good time was had by all. The camera panned to the audience to show clouds of smoke lazily rising skyward.

Did Willie Nelson Really Change All His (Bad) Habits?

The best answer is not actually, Per the Associated Press, "Willie Nelson may have given up smoking, but he hasn't stopped using marijuana."

He conceded that he has not been very kind to his lungs over the years. "I have abused my lungs quite a bit in the past, so breathing is a little more difficult these days and I have to be careful." Nelson's spokesperson said that he still smokes marijuana. He does not play by the rules. She said, "Willie does what he wants, when he wants, when it comes to smoking."

If Nelson likes you, he wants to puff a few with you. Per Forbes, "...{H]e's a good buddy of mine. We talk a lot about smoking and I smoke with him and he's done pretty good with it."

Keep truckin' Willie!
