Aspiring star Brajawn Upshaw is certainly someone to watch on the show. He was not a shoo-in for the next phase of the contest by any means. Some folks like to sing in the shower. Upshaw, who is 21, sings at work. Per the outlet, he gives his vocal cords a workout "while doing the night shift at the post office." He is employed in Temple, Georgia, with two family members - his brother and mom, according to American Songwriter.

His Mom Urged Him to Try For 'American Idol'

Upshaw was upfront about who pushed him to go for American Idol - his mom, Tasha! He told the judges, "I didn't even want to do 'American Idol.' My mom signed me up without me knowing." Wow! Sometimes mothers know when to give their kids a little push towards success. He acknowledged "hold[ing] himself back from doing things he wants," according to the outlet. So maybe Mom knew best when she exhorted Upshaw to go for it.

He has enjoyed singing since third grade, so this is a longtime passion for Upshaw. However, the talented young man did say in his audition video that he is somewhat reticent about going after things. "I've held myself back a lot because of the simple fact that I didn't think I could do a lot," he said, per American Songwriter.

"Coming out with a golden ticket is showing my mom that she was right," Upshaw added.

According to the outlet, "An August 2019 post to his Instagram page shows a much-younger Upshaw dressed in black, singing behind a podium." He posted, "I love you Dad and I finished the song. I hope you heard it."
