Cody Johnson Wishes He Could Tell His Younger Self to 'Pray More, Drink Less

Cody Johnson is doing just fine in country music, a fact that is a bit surprising for him. Johnson reveals what he wishes he could go back and tell his younger self, perhaps saving him some trouble and heartache along the way.

"As bad as I would love to go back and tell a younger version of me some advice, like, slow down. It's going to be OK," Johnson reveals, adding that he also wishes he hadn't tried to hard to be like one of his biggest country music heroes.

"And also," he adds with a laugh. "There was only one Waylon Jennings, and you don't have to live that crazy. It's not going to get you anywhere. Maybe pray more, drink less, things like that."

Still, while he might not have struggled so hard earlier in his career, Johnson acknowledges that it was all he went through that got him to where he is today.

"As much as I'd love to go back and tell that kid that, it may have changed something that wouldn't get me to where I'm at," he adds.

Cody Johnson's "She Hurts Like Tequila"

Johnson might wish he had imbibed a little less, but he did benefit from his experience with alcohol. The Texan recently released "She Hurts Like Tequila," a hit single with Carin Leon.

"Tequila hurts me," Johnson reveals. "So I either like a Don Julio 1942 with three cubes of ice and just sip it. Or if I'm going to make a margarita, I like Don Julio 1942 ... But if we're going to take shots, you might as well just grab the cheapest tequila you can and just shoot it. Because it's going to be the salt, lime. You gotta have salt and lime."

Johnson is now a much healthier version of himself. While he hasn't given up drinking, he has given up most carbs, calling it the "Carnivore 2.0" diet.

"I'm not eating any bread, anything like that," Johnson reveals on Audacy's Superstar Power Hour. "And it sucks because whenever your daughter wants to go to Texas Roadhouse for her birthday party, and you go in and they lay those cinnamon biscuit roll things in front of you, and your mouth's drooling. I would kill somebody for some biscuits and gravy right now."
