The "Smart" Career Move Lukas Nelson Is Copying From His Father, Willie Nelson, on Debut Solo Album

Ar age 36, Lukas Nelson is staking out his own ground as a talented and versatile country music singer and musician. That is not easy when your dad is the legendary Willie Nelson. The elder Nelson understandably casts a very long shadow. But Lukas has done extremely well himself. With the release of his debut solo LP, American Romance, he definitively proved that he has come into his own. In some ways, though, Lukas is following in his father's footsteps. Given how long and successful Willie's career has been, that is a good strategy. What, exactly, is Lukas copying from his dad when it comes to having a game plan for his burgeoning career?

Nelson Made His Feelings Clear About His Music Philosophy

Per time.com, he said, "You have artists like Kacey Musgraves, Zach Bryan, Chris Stapleton, Tyler Childers—these are the artists that I respect, and I want to be part of that conversation and musical landscape. I want to have a career that lasts as long as my father's. And when my father played, he played for his generation, and they followed him now up into his nineties. So in order to have that longevity, I have to be smart and play to my own people."

He Takes Pride in Being a Songwriter

Nelson is a gifted songwriter. He had a lot to do with the music in the Lady Gaga-Bradley Cooper 2018 version of A Star Is Born. He penned eight songs for the popular film. That movie was the fourth edition of A Star Is Born. Many movie buffs recall the powerful 1976 version with Barbra Streisand and the late Kris Kristofferson as the doomed lovers from the music world. The tragic ending is heart-wrenching.

Nelson said, "I've always believed that I could stand toe-to-toe with anyone as a songwriter. I am a songwriter first and foremost—I play good guitar, and I sing well, and I perform well, but the songs are the most important thing, what brought me to A Star is Born and what really, I think, caused Neil [Young] to take notice."
